Sewing x Design Workshop Series
A series of workshops taught at the Invention Studio, a student-run makerspace. Based on technical skills for the makerspace machines, the workshops rely on design behavior fundamentals developed by the Innovation and Design Collaborative.
Self-Directed; some workshops co-facilitated with Eric Kim
Spring + Fall 2018
Embroidery + Brainstorming
Working with images of embroidery as inspiration, workshop attendees sorted through the examples to understand different embroidery techniques and capabilities. They worked in groups to design a patch that we digitized and embroidered together.
Rapid Prototyping
Planned and facilitated with Eric Kim. Given a “How Might We…” question, students brainstormed ideas and used low fidelity materials to communicate their ideas.
Hand Sewing
This workshop focused heavily on developing specific technical skills and introducing students to new analog tools.
The Serger Machine
The Invention Studio got a new serger! A special workshop focused on the machine, giving everyone a change to practice while making scrunchies and pencil pouches.
Upcycling Clothing
Workshop attendees started by mapping out the opportunities and limitations of old t-shirts and jeans in order to better understand what to create from the materials.
Embroidery + Visual Design Elements
Students worked through multiple rounds of sketching, developing their embroidery design based on the elements of visual design. Each attendee digitized and embroidered their own design.
